The Unofficial Citadel Guide to the Galaxy
For Use With Citadel-86, Written by Hue, Jr.
--don't bother citing my name, it just distracts the reader--
by
Stiletto Retrogres @ The Endless Labyrinth (616) 629-5639
It would be a good idea to print this out and have it handy as you are ON
the Citadel that you're trying to understand. Reading through it or at least
skimming it before calling is a good idea, too.

Part I: Initial Logon and Getting Aquainted-With
----- ----------------------------------------
At Connection: When the BBS answers, wait. If text is displayed, let it roll
by until it stops. If, after connecting, nothing happens, start
sending carriage returns. This is called "knocking", and every
once in --a-- while you need to do it if nothing happens when you first
connect. So: if nothing happens, sit on the ENTER key.
The banner will start scrolling by, and it will end at a prompt like
this (at bottom of screen):
<L>ogin <G>oto <U>ngoto <H>elp <=== List of Main Commands Avail.
Abyss> <=== This is the "room", or, message
area that you are in.
Meaning of the Commands (very vague):0
-----------------------
<H>elp: Hit "H" for some extensive help files, but if you have
this, don't bother with the help files yet.
<U>ngoto: Opposite of Goto.
<G>oto: Don't use this yet!
<L>ogin: This is what you want to do FIRST.
Definition of Rooms (again vague):
-------------------
Rooms are the message areas on Citadel. When you connect, you are
automatically in the "Message Area". There are file areas access-
able, but we'll save that for later on. Most rooms will end with
greater than symbols: ">" so that you know they are rooms.
(See Part II: Room Titles)
<<keep going>>
Getting Started:
---------------
<<This is what you need>>
You're at the opening doorway of Citadel. It'll be hostile until you
log in, so hit "L" right away, and you'll be confronted by this:
(><)
Enter Password (Just carriage return if new)
:
(><)
Alright. If you have a password on the Citadel that you are calling
this is where you enter it. However, most likely you're new. In that case,
you just hit return/enter/CR.
You'll then be asked:
(><)
No Record: Would you like to log in New? (Y/N):
(><)
And of course you'll say yes. If you get your password wrong in the
future you'll also receive this message. The first question in the New User
Questionaire is for your screen width. Most likely you have 80 columns. If
you're not sure, just put 80. Next you'll be questioned about linefeeds:
(><)
Is there a blank line between the X's? (Y/N):
(><)
YES if it looks like this: NO if it looks like this:
XXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXX
The next question has an obvious answer, or so you may think.
(><)
Are you an experianced Citadel User: (Y/N)?
(><)
IF YOU NEEDED THIS FILE SO FAR YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERT!
**** HOWEVER! ****
For --NOW-- you will answer YES to this question. DO NOT say "no"
or --oops-- the much of this help file will be useless to you. But from this point
you cannot diverage from instructions in this file or YOU WILL BE LOST!
AFTER you are done configuring your user parameters, you will switch to non-
Expert mode.
But remember: you are not an expert! This is merely done to configure
your parameters to the way that will be most convient without future changes.
(><)
Do you want Time displayed on messages?
(><)
Yes, you do. It's just nice to know.
This may seem a bit commanding, but it's just a rather nice thing to
know what time it was that Billy-Bob left you a message to call him right
away. (-; --Y'all might mention that the date is always displayed.--
(><)
Display last old message on <N>ew: (Y/N)?
(><)
Okay, Citadel displays messages in a constant flow, without pauses
between messages. So, in order to keep track of what was last said the last
message that was displayed last time you read messages in that room will be
displayed first.
If you're a little confused, just answer yes. It's the best choice.
(><)
Do you want floor mode on?
(><)
What this does is organize the message areas in a way to make the
conversations flow: All serious topic rooms on one floor, silly rooms on
another, and netrooms on yet another.
It is a good idea to turn this on.
(><)
Enter Name
:
(><)
Now, most likely, your sysop wants you to put the Name that all of
your messages will be saved under here. So if you want the handle of
Wilowisp, but you put your real name here you'll be stuck with your real name
heading all messages by you.
If a sysop requires that you use a handle, most likely he will already
have told you.
(><)
Enter password
:
(><)
Kinda obvious, eh? Now, after you have type the name and password that
you wish to use, Citadel will display them to you: (ex)
Name: Stiletto
Password: gargle-blaster*
...and ask if they are the way you want them. If you say no, it'll ask
you to enter your name and password again; so say yes if its the way you want
it.
The system will permanently enter your name into the userlog, and you
will be able to log back in any time using the password that you specified
above. You'll now see some sort of NOTICE most likely. It'll just be a snazzy
little file that the sysop created to catch your eye. Now you'll get some sort
of confusing stuff on your screen:
(><)
Rooms with unread messages on Floor [Athens]
Abyss> Mythology> Anthropology> Movie Reviews> User Names> Glass Silver>
Local Net) Car Wars>
Other floors with unread messages:
[Sparta] [The River Styx] [Underwater Canals] [Halls of Montezuma]
Abyss>
(><)
Explaination --explanation-- time: The "rooms" are, of course --or,
instead, "as noted"--, message areas. Now,
the names of rooms and floors and stuff like that will almost positively not
be the same, but these are just examples. Now, hit .ECE: .<E>nter <C>onfig-
uration <E>xpert -- this will set you to NON-EXPERT mode. Your prompt will
like this:
(><)
<N>ew Messages <E>nter <G>oto <U>ngoto
Abyss>
(><)
When you feel that you've got those four major commands memorized, just
use .ECE to shut it off and be an expert. You've got quite a few options at
this point. Do you want to read the new messages? If so, hit <N>. This will
give you all the new messages that there are in the room that you are currently
in. Do you want to NOT read anything in this room and go onto the next?
Example: You don't want to read about Sea Shells, and that is the room that
you're currently in. Hit <G> and all the messages in the room will be marked
as already read and Citadel will bring you to the next room with new messages.
If you have an interesting fact that you want to enter about Sea Shells in the
Sea Shells> room, you can hit <E> and you'll be able to enter a message.
The message base will be explained in part II.
* *
Part II The Message Base
------- ----------------
The Citadel Arrangement
-----------------------
Citadel's message areas are set up like a large circle. You start out
in the main room. Then when you hit <G> to GOTO the next room with a new
message, Citadel will place you in the next message area with messages that
you have not read. And when you have read all available messages or all
messages have been marked as read by <G>otoing over rooms containing messages,
you'll be back in the main room. Ex:
Lobby>
/ \
Beta Files> Mail>
/ \
Music> Mythology>
\ \
Vacations> Library>
\ /
Cooking> Car Wars>
\ /
Motorcycles> -- Cola Wars>
The Lobby is the main room, in this example. If you call, and there are
messages in Lobby, Library, Motorcycles, and Vacations, you'll get a message
like:
(><)
There are new messages in the following rooms:
Lobby> Library> Motorcycles> Vacations>
(><)
Messages in the main room are displayed as soon as you log in. To pause
messages as they call by hit <P>. If you want to skip over the current message
and go to the next message in order, hit <N>. If you want to stop message flow
completely in a room and go to the prompt (roomname>) then hit <S>.
You will then hit <G> and Citadel will bring you to the first room, in
order, that has new messages (Library). It will look something like this:
(><)
Lobby> Goto Library
50 messages
8 new
Library>
(><)
If you want to read the new messages in Library, hit <N>, and they be
displayed started with the last message you read in that room. If you want to
keep going and not read messages in this room, or after you have read messages
in a certain room, hit <G> again. It'll bring you to the next room with new
messages: Motorcycles>, skipping over the rooms without new messages. They
won't even be mentioned. You can also <E>nter messages in rooms, too. After
you goto Vacations, the last room with new messages, and hit <G>oto to go to
the next room with new messages, you'll get this:
(><)
Vacations> Goto Lobby>
Lobby>
(><)
This means that all messages that are new have been read. At this
point you can log out. Later on, as you learn about other Citadel features you
can go into doors or look at files, too. (Which you can do before you read
messages, too). To log out, hit <T>erminate.
Room Types!:
----------
A room is a message area. Most of them are designated by a >, which
means that the room is for discussion and that is about it. The
SysOp can choose to change rooms to other types, too:
* Net-Rooms: These rooms are shared with other Citadels via the
CitaNet --C86Net, because CitaNet is copyrighted by Vince
Q. and refers to the C128 net he used to run--.
They have ) at the end of the roomnames. Ex:
CitaNetroom)
There are many differant --different-- Citadel Netrooms
you can access.
* Directory-Rooms: These rooms are available for Uploads and
Downloads, or one of the two --or none, for that matter--. They are marked
by a ] at the end of the roomname. Ex:
Text Files]
- To see the directory in a room, hit:
.RE: Read-Extended Directory.
- To read a TEXT file, hit:
.RT: Read Text File(s)
- To DOWNLOAD, hit:
.RZB: Read Zmodem Binary-Files.
OR
.RXB: Xmodem...or other Protocols.
Then type the name of the file.
--.Help PROTOCOL will get the list of protocols if the standard help file set
is used--
- To UPLOAD, hit:
.EZF: Enter Xmodem File-Upload
OR
.EXF: Xmodem...and other Protocol.
* Directory-Netrooms: Just a netroom with a directory. These
are designated by : at the end of the roomname.
Ex:
CitaNews:
* Read-Only Rooms: Obviously. These have [read only] written above
the roomname.
Advanced Message Base Tips:
--------------------------
<S>kip: If you don't want to read the messages in a room, but want to
save them for later or just don't want them marked as old yet,
<S>kip over the room.
<U>ngoto: Accidently <G>oto over a room that you wanted to read? <U>ngoto
the room and all the messages that were marked as new in this
call in that room will be new for you to read.
.COMMAND: Hitting .<G>oto ROOMNAME you can direct yourself to any room that
you want, even if it doesn't have any new messages. .<S>kipping,
.<U>ngotoing, and other various commands with a . in front of them
can be used to direct yourself to certain rooms or other things.
<R>everse: Read all the messages in the room from the latest message to the
Read: oldest message. Use <S> and <P> to Stop reading and Pause text.
<O>ld-Rev: Starting with the last message marked as read (last time you
goto'ed over a room) it displays messages backwards in that room.
<F>orward: Starting with the oldest message in a room, it displays them ALL
Read: until the latest.
<Z>orget: Okay, use this sparingly. If you NEVER, EVER want to read
messages in a certain room ever again, you can hit <Z> and Citadel
will drop that room off the list of rooms that it gives you new
messages from. You can, however, type .<G>oto ROOMNAME of a room
that you have Zorgotten and it will re-enlist the room when
new messages are in it.
*
Part III: The Aftermath
-------- -------------
Getting Used to It:
------------------
So, Citadel is really simple. If you know to <L>ogin when you connect,
and that you hit <G> to goto rooms, then hit <N> to read new messages you're
set. You can enter messages with <E>, and when you've reach the room you
started out with again you hang up with <T>erminate.
--But, from this document, is* it so simple? If it took this long to describe
the basics of Citadel ...--
Extra Stuff:
-----------
(Citadel Perks and Fun Stuff)
Mail>: Private Mail to specific Users. .<G>oto MAIL
<C>hat: Hit <C> to Page the SysOp of the Citadel Installation.
<M>eet User: Hit <M> then type the name of any user and you can read
the biography that they wrote about themselves. You
can enter your own by hitting .<E>nter <C>onfiguration
<B>iography.
<D>oors: On-line games that are accessable with the D key, and
privileges from the sysop
<H>elps: The on-line help system that will probably lose you.
.<T>erminate-: You log out, and without hanging up someone else can log
<S>tay: in.
Final Words:
-----------
Citadel-86 is a fun thing to really get into. If, however,
you are still lost after reading this file, please try and use a
local Citadel anyways. If you still are feeling lost, hit <C> and
page the SysOp. If he's around, he (or she) will definately help
you out.
